My name is Joumana Medlej. I am an artist specialized in the ancient Kufic script, which I shape into geometric designs or hand-written patterns.
I learned this long-lost Arabic style from a master calligrapher in my native Lebanon, and I’m one of very few calligraphers, and to my knowledge the only woman, to keep this tradition alive today—not copying the past, but constantly reinventing the script.
My subject matter is infused with Sufi philosophy and has a timeless, contemplative quality. The purpose of Kufic was to nourish the soul with beauty and meaning; this is at the heart of my work today.
