My name is Joumana Medlej. I am a calligraphy artist with a highly personal approach: I create symbols, or mandalas, out of words in the Kufic script. I learned this ancient Arabic style from a master calligrapher in my native Lebanon, and I’m one of very few calligraphers, and to my knowledge the only woman, to keep this tradition alive today—not by copying the past, but by constantly reinventing the script. The purpose of Kufic was to nourish the soul with beauty and meaning woven together; this remains the heart of my work. My subject matter is infused with Sufi philosophy and clothed in geometry. The resulting pieces have a contemplative quality, and emanate a stillness that offers some relief from the chaos of today’s world. (For more details, here are my artist statement and my CV).
Aside from my one-off art pieces, I create ranges of illuminated prints and other hand-finished products that can be made locally and sustainably: you will find these in my Etsy shop.
If you’re a retailer and would like to stock my work, please drop me a line and I’ll be glad to send you my catalogue.
Do you want to be the first to know about my new art, courses, products and special offers? Then I recommend subscribing to my newsletter, which will bring all these straight to your inbox once a month (or less, if I’m deep in my studio and lost to the world again).
