Tafakkuk تفكّك expresses “dismantling, disintegration, breaking up, disjointing, disconnection”… A feeling I had been sitting with throughout December, and this piece came together quite spontaneously on the final day of 2015. It was made small to match a box frame I had on hand, and it’s the first time I use Eastern Kufic in a piece; its triangular and slashing nature is more expressive than the other, square and stable styles of Kufic.
The fallen pieces reveal a gold background, and the gold on their own obverse. They lay where they have fallen, and are loose inside the box frame, moving around when it is moved.
