Recently I’ve been very drawn to using pattern and repetition as a means of evoking, on paper, the feel and (visual) texture of cloth. The use of natural colours enhances this, because they have so much depth and life they add a texture of their own. This piece is the first in a series of “tapestries” using simple repeated units to achieve rich, apparently complex compositions from which the eye never tires of teasing out patterns.

Watercolour is not normally used with a reed pen, and I didn’t want pigment to accrete on my best pens so I cut a couple of twigs and was constantly re-cutting them as I went. The organic variations resulting from this add to the liveliness and un-mechanical feel of the result.
