The virtue of Sabr (صبر) designates both patience and endurance, and the knot formed by the four ص ties in with this concept. In Islam it is said to be one of the two parts of faith (the other being Shukr.) In Sufism, Sabr is a maqâm (a station on the path).
The “knot” idea was there from the start.
