Contrary to misconceptions on all sides, Jihad جهاد really means “striving, struggle, making every effort [towards a goal]”. Testimony to this is the fact this is a popular first name among Christians as well as Muslims.

In its extended meaning of “holy war”, the Prophet differentiated between two kinds of jihad, of which the war against external enemies was the lesser. The Greater Jihad is “the war on our lower self,” the internal battle of self-improvement, the struggle to overcome one’s base instincts.
