3aql عقل is the mind, reason or intellect, i.e the rational faculty (Greek: nous). In Islam, it refers not so much to the rational function, but to a faculty of metaphysical perception for apprehending the Divine. As the silver suggests, however, the intellect (as mind) is a relatively inferior function, tortuous and unaware of its own limitations: “The mind is the slayer of the real.”
